I lived in several foreign countries and did not know (when I arrived) how to speak the languages. I had the advantage of immersion and learned the same way a child would, by hearing, listening and repeating. Since you don’t have this opportunity, the next best thing is listening to English speakers. One great way to do so is to watch movies in English with your language subtitles underneath. The best movies are simple ones, children’s movies or cartoons. What you don’t understand you can read in your own language.

You also need to practice speaking. Virtually every city and town has a group of foreign language speakers who meet regularly and practice speaking a different language. Most will try to include a native speaker (I was often invited to English groups so people could practice their English with me). Most times the charge for these groups is very little, if they charge at all. They usually meet in coffee shops or libraries.

The ‘do it yourself’ learning tapes and books require a lot of self-motivation and are difficult to use. You need to have discipline to practice daily. And, no one corrects your mistakes. You would be better joining a group or possibly exchanging language lessons with someone who would like to learn your language.
